Abstract

This paper proposes a framework for cross-layer adaptation for multimedia transmission over wired and wireless networks. The proposed framework consists of four entities: The sender, the proxy, which is located at the edge of the wired network, the access point, which co-located with the proxy and finally the wired and wireless receivers. The main concept is based on a “holistic approach” in which all layers participate to the adaptation process and make its own contributions. In addition, the proposed framework can support both wired and wireless receivers in one platform and cross layer information are used in order to support wireless users whereas TCP friendly estimations are used in order to support wired users.
